To be honest I had never heard of The Bowen Technique until a lifeguard at my local swimming pool mentioned she had been having the therapy and highly recommended it.

I compete in triathlon and put my body through a heavy training program to achieve my swimming, biking and running goals.

My first session with Sue was two days prior to an important target race of mine, the NZ National Triathlon Champs. I needed to release the tension from my muscles and be able to relax which I hoped would allow me to be at my physical peak on race day. Before this session with Sue I felt very ‘wound-up’. My legs were fatigued and my body was carrying a lot of stress, especially in my neck and lower back. I was on edge with pre race nerves and starting to feel over whelmed with everything going on in my life and the pressures / goals I put on myself to achieve. After one hour with Sue, my first Bowen Technique completed, I definitely felt the effects. Firstly, I did not want to move off the treatment bed….I felt in weightless bliss. It actually took several attempts to sit up before I felt level headed enough to stay upright. I followed Sues’ directions, drank my water, stopped within my thirty minutes car drive on my way home to briefly walk around and kept moving for the rest of the day. I felt tired and light headed. The only thing I can compare the feeling to is a minor case of motion sickness. I gave in to the exhaustion and slept like a baby all night. The following day I needed to wear a nappy like a baby, as I was a pee machine. I guess my body had a heck of a lot of toxins to remove. By the next day (race day) I felt fantastic. The biggest impression on me was my uncharacteristic sense of calm. My race was a huge success; I came out firing and had energy to burn. I won my age group and the series trophy and as a result have been selected for the NZ Triathlon Team to compete in Beijing later in the year.

I returned to Sue for a Bowen treatment three days following the race. After this session I went straight home to bed for a nana-nap and slept soundly for two hours. My body was working hard to recover and I was listening to it. I have since had a session with Sue the day after an extreme hill running race. My legs were very painful and my muscles felt absolutely fried. I have no doubt that The Bowen Technique Sue administered aided in my recovery.

Patient Testimonials

Bowen Therapy is named after its originator Tom Bowen and is unlike any other form of hands on therapy. It originated in Australia and is now practised in over 30 countries world-wide.

There are no forced movements, pulling or cracking of joints, no insertion of needles or use of electricity. You will usually lie down on a comfortable couch and experience gentle, rolling type movements which are made across ligaments, muscles and tendons. This action stimulates the connective and soft tissues and initiates energy flow within the body which in turn helps the body to commence the healing process. A short period of rest between each move gives the body time to act on the messages it is receiving before the next movement is applied.

If lying down is a problem then sitting is possible. You don't usually have to undress. Bowen can be done through a single layer of light clothing. Some people do prefer work to be done directly on their skin and this is fine. At all times you are covered by a warm blanket, which helps you to relax
and maintain your privacy.

Bowen Therapy

You will feel relaxed and experience improved well being.
I trained in England with the European College of Bowen Studies and have 10 years experience in using Bowen. I am a member of the International Institute of Complimentary Therapists (IICT)

As a Physiotherapist also trained in acupuncture, I found Bowen to be quicker and more acceptable to many patients in resolving their muscle and joint, aches and pains.

I have successfully helped people with many wide ranging problems, babies with colic, Arthritis sufferers, Chronic neck & back pain, those who have had surgery and have still been in pain and even some who have been told that there is nothing more that can be done for them.
During the initial session a comprehensive history of your problem will be taken and how it is affecting your life. I will also ask about other areas of health, such as digestion, sleep, any other aches and pains etc. This is because Bowen is a holistic therapy which can improve other areas of your bodily function as well as the problem you currently want help for. When the treatment begins you will be asked to lie face down on a comfortable couch. If lying is a problem the treatment can be modified and done sitting, but I have found people do relax better when lying down. Bowen moves are felt as light pressure. A series of ‘moves’ are done then you are left to relax for a few minutes to allow the body to respond to the stimulus it has been given. The periods of relaxation are just as important as the moves themselves. A session lasts between 45minutes to an hour generally. For acute conditions this may be shorter, depending on what is required.

What's involved in a treatment session and how many sessions will be needed?

The number of treatment sessions needed will depend on the problem. Acute (new) injuries or conditions, may only take 1 – 2 sessions. Problems that have lasted years on and off, or are more complicated ( eg nerve damage) will take more time, however people with long standing problems often find some improvement after 3 sessions and the improvement usually continues with further sessions.
For long standing problems you need to commit yourself to a minimum of 3 sessions to give your body time to start to change for the better. The body is intelligent. For example it knows that in order to improve your back pain it needs to help your ankle to work better, so you walk better and then your back pain improves. I have seen this happen many times.

Who can benefit from Bowen treatment ?

As there are no adverse side effects from Bowen Therapy and no known contra-indications, everyone can benefit from treatment regardless of their age or state of health. Also people who would generally be considered healthy can benefit from this remarkable therapy because it promotes deep relaxation and an increased sense of well-being.

If you play sports and have had massages to relieve your aches and pains, Bowen is an alternative, deeper acting therapy, its is generally longer lasting and is most definately less painful.

Bowen therapists do not diagnose problems or conditions, they treat the WHOLE person, with a particular problem or problems. You may have several problems, these can be treated all at the same time as the body is treated as a whole.

So something that you have just learned to live with, may also suddenly improve (as with the person with an old broken ankle and back pain quoted earlier).

CHILDREN respond particularly well and enjoy Bowen. BABIES with colic are often helped with 1-3 sessions, without drugs. With Cerebral Palsy the muscles can relax and Bowen helps the body to communicate with itself (long term treatment required).

Testimonials
FIRST VISIT "Sue ascertained that my left hip looked quite a bit higher than my right hip, perhaps due to rotation of the hip.
A few seconds after Sue had left the room for the first time, my right leg rippled up the bed: I could feel it brushing against the trouser leg.
After further treatment, I felt a gradual build up of pain which reached a crescendo then died away.
The treatment left me wide-eyed and full of energy.
During the next three weeks, the pain lessened considerably and no longer disturbed my night’s sleep. Unfortunately, due to bereavement and illness, my next appointment had to be three weeks later."
SECOND VISIT - "After Sue began treatment and had left the room, my left leg and hip literally jumped off the bed in an involuntary spasm. It felt so strange because my right side did not move. I’d had SINUSITIS, and so Sue did movements to relax my head. Afterwards, my head felt as though it were expanding".
